The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States has been profound. Despite initial declines in cases in May 2020 following implementation of stringent stay-at-home orders, cases are resurging in most states. The number of deaths has been rising in many states, with hospitalization rates for COVID-19 now again matching or exceeding numbers seen at the peak in New York City in March and April. Hospitals are under pressure or approaching a crisis in many places around the country. This resurgence is stressing many sectors of society, from businesses to education to health care. Unlike many countries in the world, the United States is not currently on course to get control of this epidemic. It’s time to reset. Read On.
Plant Intelligence
I marvel over the ability of plants to reset imbalances.
Trod through a patch of nettles?
Dock leaves are always growing next to the nettles.
Wrap the dock leaf around the sting to draw out the histamine reaction.
Scientists studying Sudden Oak Death, Phytophora pathogen, in California Oaks found in the wild that a natural barrier was created from the oak trees that went through the stages of the disease.
The tree hardens and encapsulates the pathogen preventing insects and rain furthering the spread of the disease.
This healing action is a slow process in the wild.
Human interactions, changing climates undermine Nature's ability to find equilibrium.
The scale of a remedy matches the scale of an imbalance.
I'm following plants.
They are
self reliant
self aware
and self care.
Covid - 19's manifest destiny is to survive in order to balance.
Just as we must unite with humankind so we must unite with all other living organisms.
Fighting against....war against....the Different Enemy and sharing less are all outcomes of viewing the world through the lens of separation.
Choosing a life in balance unites us with Nature's imitable force.
I believe in Humankind, Nature's intelligence and the silver lining that reveals hope amidst great change.
Two Plant Allies
Elderberry
High in flavonoids this berry in a syrup decoction lessens the symptoms of cold and flu.
Decrease blood sugar levels in tea form.
Skin health.
Reduces inflammation.
Honey Gardens is one of the best elderberry syrups from Vermont.
Lucky enough to come across Elderberries here's my recipe to make and have through cold and flu season.
Ingredients:
3 ½ cups cold water
1 cup dried elderberries
1 tablespoon fresh ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon cloves
1 cup raw honey
Instructions:
Add water, elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves in a medium saucepan.
Bring to a boil then cover and reduce to a simmer 45 minutes to an hour, or until the liquid has reduced to almost half. Remove saucepan from heat and allow to cool.
Carefully mash the berries then pour syrup through a strainer into a large bowl.
When the syrup is completely cooled, add the honey and stir well.
Pour into a sealable jar and store in the fridge for up to three weeks.
Shrooooms!
This superfood from Om has three immune enhancing mushrooms.
Reishi, Turkey Tail and Maitake. Beta Glucans, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, fiber and antioxidants all work together to keep your digestion and circulatory system at it's optimum.
The powder can be used in a variety of ways.
Add to warm drinks tea and coffee.
Add to smoothies.
I've been adding this blend into my gluten free recipes.

Self Reliance Immunity Practices
1) Rest, nap and sleep.
Feel tired? It's your body telling you that it needs a break. During stressful times sleeping more is the easiest way to recharge.
2) "The solution to pollution is dilution."
My biology teacher's rhyme is what I sing to remind me of the importance of hydration. Room temperature or warm water with herbal tea. Sorry..... sodas, caffeinated beverages and sugar based drinks don't hydrate your body. If you must make sure in-between those types of beverages you're getting 1 liter of water a day.
3) Choose Green
Any plant that is green is good for your lungs. Chlorophyl which is present in all leafy greens oxygenates the blood and supports blood flow to the lungs. Try to stay away from congestive foods; high sugar content, dairy and saturated fat.
4) 10 Minutes Twice Daily Breathing Meditation
A regular meditation practice is one of the best ways to reset a body that is stressed. Our breathing becomes shallow and vital oxygen is not circulating throughout the body when we are anxious or tired. The diaphragm, a fibrous muscle that sits just below the rib cage and responsible for expanding our lungs becomes inflexible. It's important to exercise the "Bellows of Our Lungs" to achieve deep and even breath.
Try out my Two Lung Breathing technique while meditating.
Imagine that you have a second pair of lungs in your abdomen. As you draw in a deep breath think and feel that your abdominal lungs are filling up first. As you exhale again think and feel your abdominal lungs exhaling the air completely. Be comfortable...if your mind wanders....as it will bring your attention back to your breath. You'll be calming your spirit, exercising your diaphragm and expanding your lung capacity. Just 10 minutes in the AM and PM....Let's Breathe!

Keeping Your Immunity High
Nature knows the way of finding balance during times of great change. Let's tune into Nature's cues and our scientific community; World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) during virus, flu and cold spikes to keep our immunity strong.
Here are four practical ways to increase your immunity.
Sleep. And sleep on a consistent and regular schedule. If you're like me I sleep lightly and tend to wake up often. I've learned that if I am tired during the day, taking a nap break gives my body time to regenerate and the endocrine system to recalibrate.
Nourish. Eat foods that support your body. Vegetables, fruits, soups, whole grains like oatmeal and plant based protein. Bone broth... chicken soup is great to help warm and nourish our bodies. Alcohol, sugar, processed food and too much caffeine amps your body into an unbalanced cycle which lowers your immunity. Try not to pile on food late after 7:00PM. A slowing digestive system leads to a build up of undigested food that taxes your organs. To heighten immunity you want all of your organs to be running at optimum.
Hydrate. The solution to pollution is dilution. Keep everything flowing is key for strong immune systems. Too cold outside to consume water? Warming teas or room temperature water is best. Drink between meals and not during. Any ginger and turmeric based herbal tea helps to reduce inflammation and heightens your stomach's ability to digest.
Less Stress.
Go outside into nature. Take technology breaks. News breaks. Go do something fun. Laugh more. When your emotions are balanced and you're happy your body's immunity goes up.
Everything is energy.
Your thought begins it.
Your emotions amplify it.
Your actions increase the momentum.
Choose the good ones.
Shelves empty of hand sanitizer? I made my own. It's easy to make and if you choose can personalize it with your own essential oil scent.
Here’s what you need:
2/3 cup isopropyl alchohol 91% (rubbing alcohol)
1/3 cup aloe vera gel Look for organic and close to being pure aloe vera gel.
My go to essential oil for anti bacterial is Ravensare (Ravensara aromatica). Others essential oils nice to use are lavender, frankincense or rosemary. I don't recommend artificial scents.
A small or medium mixing bowl
A spoon
An empty container, such as a 3-ounce container from a travel toiletries kit. I've used a pump dispenser.
A label
Here’s how to make it:
In a mixing bowl, stir the isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel together until well blended. I doubled the recipe and keep one in my car and at home.
Add 8-10 drops of scented essential oil. This isn't necessary if you don't have essential oils. Stir to incorporate.
Pour the homemade hand sanitizer into an empty container and seal.
Write “hand sanitizer” on your label.
Rub vigorously on top and bottom of hands. Use when the recommended soap and warm water washing of hands is not available. Avoid getting it in your eyes.
Nature is singing all around us.
Follow her cues of balance, moderation and energy.
Follow your heart and you will know the way.
Onward,
M
